First-Touch vs Last-Touch Attribution: What's the Difference?
First-touch attribution gives 100 percent of the credit to the channel that started the customer journey, while last-touch attribution gives 100 percent to the channel that closed it. Both are biased: first-touch over-credits awareness, organic search, and brand-building, while last-touch over-credits retargeting, branded search, and email. First-touch suits top-of-funnel investment decisions and last-touch suits closing-campaign optimization, but neither alone should drive budget allocation. Comparing channel performance across the two models is the most common mistake.
First-touch attribution gives 100% credit to the channel that started the customer journey. Last-touch attribution gives 100% credit to the channel that closed it. Both are biased — and the bias direction matters for which channels get funded.
How each works
Customer sees a Google brand ad on Tuesday, then 4 Meta retargeting ads over 2 weeks, then converts on Meta. First-touch: 100% Google brand. Last-touch: 100% Meta. Same customer, different stories.
The known biases
- First-touch bias: over-credits awareness + organic search + brand-building. Under-credits performance / retargeting / closing channels.
- Last-touch bias: over-credits retargeting + branded search + email. Under-credits awareness, top-of-funnel, brand investment.
When each is useful
- First-touch: understanding what brings new customers in. Top-of-funnel investment decisions.
- Last-touch: optimizing closing campaigns. Performance team day-to-day.
- Neither alone: for top-line marketing strategy or budget allocation. Use MER or multi-touch.
The most common mistake
Comparing channel performance across attribution models. A channel that wins on last-touch (Meta retargeting) usually loses on first-touch. A channel that wins on first-touch (Google brand, organic, podcast) usually loses on last-touch. Neither comparison is meaningful in isolation.
