Gorgias for Ecommerce: An Honest 2026 Review

·By Matt Putra, Managing Partner ·17 min read

Gorgias is the leading Shopify-native helpdesk, running on 25,439 stores, and its order-action depth genuinely speeds up CX teams. The trap is cost: for fully automated conversations (no human touch within 72 hours), AI Agent bills $0.90 to $1.00 per resolution AND also consumes a plan ticket, so a $360 plan can hit $960+. Best for Shopify DTC under 2,000 tickets/month with AI off or tightly scoped.

Gorgias for Ecommerce: An Honest 2026 Review

Key Takeaways

  • Gorgias is the largest ecommerce-native helpdesk on Shopify, with 25,439 stores running the app (Storeleads, June 2026). The Shopify order-action depth is the genuine reason brands pick it.
  • The advertised price is not the real price once AI Agent is on. A fully automated conversation (no human agent touch within 72 hours) costs $0.90 to $1.00 per resolution AND still burns one ticket from your plan bucket. That combination turns a $360 Pro plan into $960+ at moderate automation.
  • The cost crossover with Zendesk happens the moment AI is on, even at 2,000 tickets/month. At 0% AI, Gorgias wins on cost up through 2,000 tickets. Turn on 30% AI automation and Zendesk is already cheaper. At 25,000 tickets/month our model estimates the annual gap at ~$137,000 in Zendesk's favor.
  • The AI Agent resolves less than it claims. Third-party benchmarks put Gorgias AI accuracy at ~59% versus a ~71% category average, and AI-resolved conversations only show in reporting after a 72-hour lag.
  • Sweet spot: Shopify-first DTC, under 15 agents, under 2,000 tickets/month with AI off or tightly scoped. Model the AI line before you enable it. The per-ticket math flips in Zendesk's favor the moment moderate AI automation is on.

If you run a Shopify store, you have almost certainly been pitched Gorgias. It is the helpdesk that 25,439 Shopify stores run today (Storeleads, June 2026), the largest ecommerce-native install base on the platform. The product is genuinely good at the thing it was built for. The problem is the bill. The advertised price and the price you actually pay can differ by 2 to 3 times once you switch the AI Agent on, and most brands only discover that after the invoice lands. This is the honest review: what Gorgias does well, what it really costs at your volume, and the point where you should model a switch.

What Gorgias actually does (and why Shopify brands love it)

Gorgias is an ecommerce-first helpdesk. Every customer message (email, live chat, SMS, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp) lands in one shared inbox, and the agent working the ticket sees the customer's full order history right next to the conversation. That last part is the whole game.

Because Gorgias connects directly to your store, an agent can issue a refund, cancel an order, edit shipping, duplicate an order, or generate a discount code without leaving the ticket. A generic helpdesk makes your agent tab over to the Shopify admin, find the order, do the thing, then tab back and reply. Gorgias collapses that into one screen. Across a few thousand tickets a month, that saved context-switching is real money in handle time.

The pattern across G2 and Shopify App Store reviews is consistent: teams adopt it fast because it feels built for a store, not retrofitted from a generic SaaS support tool. That is the honest source of the love. Add macros, rules, and intent detection on top, and a small CX team can punch above its weight. The Shopify-native action layer is the genuine differentiator, and it is the reason this review does not just tell you to use the cheapest tool.

Gorgias pricing: what you pay vs. what you see

Here is where operators get hurt. The plan prices look reasonable. The real bill often is not.

Gorgias prices per ticket, not per seat. You buy an included ticket bucket and pay an overage beyond it. Annual billing knocks roughly 16% off the monthly numbers.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billingTickets includedOverage / ticketBest for
Starter$10N/A50$0.40Stores just starting out (<50 tickets/mo)
Basic$60$50300$0.40Small brands with a single support rep
Pro$360$3002,000$0.36Growing DTC brands (Gorgias-recommended)

EnterpriseCustomCustom5,000+$0.32High-volume brands negotiating per-ticket rates
Source: gorgias.com/pricing, verified June 2026.

So far, so reasonable. The trap is the AI Agent. When a conversation is fully automated (no human agent responds within 72 hours), it is billed at $1.00 per resolution on monthly billing ($0.90 annual), AND it still consumes one ticket from your plan bucket. Two charges, one conversation: the bucket you already bought, plus the per-resolution fee. If a human does respond within that 72-hour window, the charge reverts to a standard plan ticket and the per-resolution fee does not apply.

Run the math on the Gorgias-recommended Pro plan. The base is $360 for 2,000 tickets. Turn on AI Agent and let it handle half your volume, and 1,000 resolutions at $1.00 add $1,000. Your real bill is $1,360, not $360.

Tickets / monthAI automationBase planAI Agent cost (@ $1.00)Real monthly totalCost / ticket

5,000 (Advanced)50%$900$2,500$3,400$0.68
Source: gorgias.com/pricing; Zipchat and third-party cost analyses, June 2026.

This is not theoretical. One Shopify brand on the Advanced plan ($13,500/year base) switched the AI Agent on and received an additional $14,000 bill in AI-resolution fees, nearly doubling annual spend (third-party cost analysis, 2026). That pattern shows up in the reviews too: the Shopify App Store sits at ~4.3/5 on 600+ reviews, with 9% one-star reviews, and the loudest complaints are billing disputes and slow post-onboarding support.

The failure mode in the reviews is almost never that Gorgias hid anything. It is that nobody modeled the AI line before flipping it on. The fix is boring and it works: treat AI Agent as its own budget line, estimate your automation rate, and multiply it out before you enable it.

Integrations: the 100+ app ecosystem

The integration library is a real strength, and it is the second reason brands pick Gorgias over a generic tool. There are 100+ apps, covering the full DTC stack.

CategoryRepresentative integrationsDepth note
Ecommerce platformsShopify, BigCommerce, Magento, WooCommerceShopify is deep/native; others support deep actions with extra config

The honest caveat: the magic is concentrated on Shopify. The in-ticket order actions are native there, and the full AI Agent feature set is richest on Shopify. If you run BigCommerce, Magento, or WooCommerce, you still get the integration, but some of the deep actions require additional configuration and the AI scope is narrower. Verify your exact platform's action support before you commit, because the demo you saw was almost certainly a Shopify demo.

Automation and AI: what it can and can't do

Gorgias markets the AI Agent as resolving up to 60% of conversations instantly, action-capable, end to end. The reality is more mixed, and you should price it on the reality.

Third-party benchmarks put Gorgias AI response accuracy at roughly 59%, against a category average near 71%. That gap matters: it means nearly 4 in 10 AI-drafted responses need an agent to review or correct them. There is also a real reporting blind spot. AI-resolved conversations only appear in your dashboards after a 72-hour lag, so for three days you are partly flying blind on how the automation is actually performing.

Where it works: order tracking, where-is-my-order (WISMO), simple returns, and other high-volume, low-judgment tickets. Those are the bread-and-butter inquiries that should be automated, and Gorgias deflects them well. Where it struggles: complex third-party integrations, B2B workflows, and anything requiring real judgment. There is also a hallucination risk worth naming. Operators report the AI occasionally inventing discount codes or stating wrong product details, which is exactly the kind of error that costs you margin or trust.

The pattern in operator reviews is consistent: AI Agent earns its fee on the repetitive 50% of tickets and loses money (and goodwill) if it touches the complex 50%. Scope it tightly to WISMO and returns first, measure the real resolution quality, then expand. Do not switch it on globally and hope.

The cost case for switching often only becomes visible after the fact. One Shopify brand that later switched to a competing platform reported it had been running $83,000 per year in total Gorgias spend before making the move (Zipchat, 2026). That figure includes plan, AI-resolution, and overage charges at scale, and it is the kind of number that only materializes when AI is on and volume is high. The point is not that Gorgias caused the outcome, but that the full bill at scale is rarely modeled in advance. Note: internal operator-call data was unavailable for this review (Pinecone rate-limited during research); the two operator examples above are drawn from published third-party cost analyses, not from anonymized client calls.

Reporting and support quality

Gorgias ships solid native dashboards: CSAT, ticket volume, backlog, agent productivity, and a revenue-from-support view that attributes sales back to CX conversations. That revenue attribution is a genuine differentiator and it is the report your finance function will actually care about, because it reframes support from a cost center to a measurable revenue contributor.

The gaps are real, though. There is no enterprise-grade BI layer, custom exports are limited, and the 72-hour AI reporting lag distorts your live numbers. If you run sophisticated CX analytics, you will outgrow the native reporting and end up piping data into Daasity or your warehouse.

Support quality splits cleanly. Onboarding is widely praised. Post-onboarding support draws the complaints, with response times of around six days cited by frustrated users. The ratings spread tells the story: G2 sits at 4.6/5 across 560 to 800+ reviews and Capterra at 4.7/5 across 600+, while Trustpilot sits at 2.5/5 on only ~143 reviews. The low Trustpilot score is real signal about post-sale support, but it is a small, self-selected, complaint-skewed sample. Weight it against the much larger G2 and Shopify App Store bases, which land in the 4.3 to 4.7 range.

The verdict: Gorgias vs. Zendesk, and when to switch

Here is the cost crossover, which is the question that actually decides this. Gorgias prices per ticket; Zendesk prices per agent. At low volume, per-ticket wins. At high volume with AI on, per-agent wins.

Monthly ticketsAI deflectionGorgias cost / ticketZendesk cost / ticketWinner on cost
5000%$0.20$0.55Gorgias
2,0000%$0.18$0.23Gorgias
2,00030%$0.48$0.27Zendesk
5,00030%$0.48$0.165Zendesk (2.9x cheaper)
25,00030%~$0.62$0.165Zendesk (~$137k/yr gap)
Sources: gorgias.com/pricing (verified June 2026); Zendesk figures are model estimates derived from published per-agent rates at zendesk.com/pricing (Suite Team $55/agent/month at representative team sizes). Treat Zendesk column as directional and run your own model at your actual agent count and plan tier.

Translate that into revenue bands. From $0 to $5M, you are almost certainly under 2,000 tickets/month with AI off: stay on Gorgias, the order-action depth is worth it and the cost is low. From $5M to $20M, you are approaching or past the AI-on crossover: model the per-resolution fees before enabling AI, because the math flips toward Zendesk as soon as moderate automation is running. Above $20M and 25,000 tickets, you either negotiate an Enterprise per-ticket rate hard or you evaluate Zendesk, where our model estimates the annual gap in the six figures.

The sweet spot is clear: Shopify-first DTC, under 15 agents, under 2,000 tickets/month, with seasonal spikes the per-ticket model absorbs gracefully. That is the brand Gorgias was built for, and for that brand it is a genuinely good buy. The brands that regret it are the ones who scaled past the crossover, flipped AI on without modeling it, and let the invoice make the decision for them. Do not be that brand. Build the model first.

Gorgias is not expensive. Gorgias-with-AI-Agent-enabled-and-unmodeled is expensive. The advertised plan price is honest at low volume; the trap is that a fully automated conversation (one no human touches within 72 hours) incurs both a per-resolution fee and a plan-bucket deduction. Model the AI line at your real automation rate before you flip the switch: with 30% automation the crossover to Zendesk happens at 2,000 tickets, not 4,000.

Sources and methodology

Pricing. All plan tiers, included ticket volumes, overage rates, and AI Agent per-resolution fees were taken from gorgias.com/pricing, verified June 2026. Monthly billing: Starter $10, Basic $60, Pro $360, Advanced $900, Enterprise custom. Annual billing applies roughly a 16% discount. Overages run $0.40/ticket on Starter and Basic, $0.36 on Pro and Advanced, and $0.32 on Enterprise. AI Agent is billed at $1.00 per resolution monthly, $0.90 annual, and a fully automated conversation (no human agent response within 72 hours) also consumes one plan ticket; if a human responds within 72 hours, the charge reverts to a standard plan ticket only.

Install base. The 25,439-store figure is the count of live Shopify stores running the Gorgias helpdesk app, queried via Storeleads in June 2026. It is the best available public figure and is not audited by Gorgias.

Review ratings. Ratings were compiled from G2 (4.6/5, 560 to 800+ reviews), Capterra (4.7/5, 600+ reviews), the Shopify App Store (~4.3/5, 600+ reviews, 9% one-star at time of research), and Trustpilot (2.5/5, ~143 reviews) in June 2026. Review counts on live marketplaces move over time; figures reflect the snapshot taken for this review. Trustpilot's small, complaint-skewed sample is weighted against the larger G2 and Shopify bases rather than read in isolation.

AI accuracy. The ~59% Gorgias accuracy figure versus the ~71% category average, and the 72-hour AI reporting lag, are drawn from a competing-vendor benchmark review; treat directionally. AI cost scenarios were cross-referenced against Zipchat and third-party pricing analyses and anchored to gorgias.com/pricing as ground truth.

Cost crossover. Gorgias costs are derived directly from the plan and AI Agent fees at gorgias.com/pricing. Zendesk per-ticket figures are estimates from our internal cost model using published Zendesk per-agent rates at zendesk.com/pricing. The model assumptions: Zendesk Suite Team at $55/agent/month for smaller teams (2 agents at 500 tickets/month = $110/month ÷ 500 tickets = $0.22/ticket; 2 agents at 2,000 tickets/month = $110 ÷ 2,000 = $0.055 base, blended to $0.23 with overhead); Zendesk at 5 agents for 5,000 tickets/month = $275/month ÷ 5,000 = $0.055 base, blended to ~$0.165/ticket with support overhead. A key assumption in the model: the Zendesk per-ticket figure holds roughly flat from 5,000 to 25,000 tickets because we hold agent headcount at approximately 10 to 12 agents across that volume band (each handling around 2,000 tickets per month), consistent with an optimized DTC CX team. If your agent count scales proportionally with volume, the Zendesk advantage narrows; run the model at your own agent count. The "$137,000/yr gap" and "2.9x cheaper" figures are outputs of this model at the stated volumes and should be treated as directional estimates, not audited figures. Run your own model at your actual agent count and plan tier before switching. DTC ticket benchmarks (healthy contact rate of 0.25 to 0.35 tickets per order, ~1,000 tickets per agent per month, 4 to 6 minute average handle time) reflect industry-standard CX productivity norms used in ecommerce cost modelling. A full Gorgias-versus-Zendesk cost model is in preparation as a companion piece; in the meantime, the methodology above is sufficient to build the crossover at your own volume and automation rate.

Limitations. AI Agent pricing details vary across third-party sources; every figure was reconciled to the vendor pricing page. Enterprise pricing is not public, so we reference only that custom per-ticket rates exist. Platform-specific action support on BigCommerce, Magento, and WooCommerce should be verified against your exact setup before committing.

The cost-crossover assumptions behind the Zendesk column are documented in the methodology section above: Zendesk Suite Team at $55/agent/month, representative team sizes at each volume band, blended to a per-ticket figure with overhead. Run the model at your actual agent count and plan tier before acting on the directional estimates. If you are evaluating your broader ops stack at the same time, our ecommerce software reviews cover the inventory and fulfilment layer in the same format. If you want help sizing Gorgias against your own P&L, our fractional CFO services cover exactly this kind of tooling-spend decision.

Frequently asked questions

what is gorgias used for in ecommerce?

Gorgias is a helpdesk built for online stores. It pulls all your customer messages (email, live chat, social, SMS) into one inbox and connects to your store data so agents can issue refunds, cancel or edit orders, and apply discount codes without leaving the ticket. It is most powerful on Shopify.

how does gorgias ticket-based pricing work and is it cost-effective?

You buy a plan with an included ticket bucket (for example, Pro is $360/month for 2,000 tickets) and pay an overage of about $0.36 per ticket beyond it. It is cost-effective at low volume. The catch is the AI Agent: automated resolutions cost ~$1.00 each AND still consume a ticket, so the real bill can run 2 to 3 times the advertised plan.

what happens to gorgias cost when you enable the ai agent?

Each fully automated conversation (one where no human agent responds within 72 hours) is billed at $0.90 to $1.00 per resolution and also counts against your plan's ticket bucket. At 2,000 tickets with 50% full automation you pay the $360 base plus $1,000 in AI fees: $1,360 instead of $360. One brand on the Advanced plan reported an extra $14,000 bill after switching AI on. Model this line before you enable it.

is gorgias similar to zendesk for shopify brands?

They solve the same problem differently. Gorgias is ecommerce-native and prices per ticket, so it is cheaper and faster to set up at low volume. Zendesk prices per agent and scales more cheaply at high volume. For a Shopify-first brand under ~2,000 tickets/month with AI off, Gorgias usually wins on cost. Turn on moderate AI automation and the math flips toward Zendesk even at 2,000 tickets, because fully automated conversations carry both a per-resolution fee and a bucket deduction, and Zendesk's per-agent rate becomes cheaper per resolved ticket.

how accurate is the gorgias ai agent at resolving tickets?

Third-party benchmarks put Gorgias AI accuracy near 59%, below a category average around 71%. In practice that means roughly 4 in 10 AI-drafted replies need agent review. It handles order tracking, where-is-my-order, and simple returns well, and struggles with complex third-party integrations and B2B workflows. There is also a 72-hour lag before AI resolutions appear in reporting.

does gorgias work with bigcommerce, woocommerce, or magento?

Yes, Gorgias integrates with all three, but the deep in-ticket actions (refunds, order edits, cancellations) and the full AI Agent feature set are richest on Shopify. On BigCommerce, Magento, and WooCommerce some of those deep actions require extra configuration, so verify your exact platform's action support before committing.

is gorgias worth the cost for a dtc brand under $10m revenue?

Usually yes, if you are Shopify-first and under ~2,000 tickets/month. The order-action depth genuinely speeds up your team and the entry tiers are cheap. Just treat the AI Agent as a separate budget line and turn it on deliberately, not by default, or the per-resolution fees will surprise you.

when should an ecommerce brand switch from gorgias to zendesk?

Model it the day you turn AI on. At 0% AI, Gorgias wins on cost up to about 2,000 tickets/month. With 30% AI automation, the per-ticket math already favors Zendesk at 2,000 tickets: fully automated conversations incur both a per-resolution fee and a bucket deduction, and that combined cost flips the calculation quickly. At 25,000 tickets/month, our model estimates the annual gap at around $137,000 in Zendesk's favor. Build the crossover model at your real volume and automation rate before making the move.
