Subscription Apps on Shopify Plus: Real Adoption Across 74,777 Stores (2026)

· 3 min read

Recharge leads subscription-app adoption across 74,777 Shopify Plus stores at 9.43 percent (7,052 stores), far ahead of Appstle at 2.19 percent, Loop at 1.32 percent, and Bold at 0.42 percent. The right pick depends on subscription ARR: Appstle or native Shopify for under $500K, Loop for $500K to $2M growth-stage brands, and Recharge for $2M and up where custom flows and enterprise depth matter.

We pulled real adoption data across 74,777 Shopify Plus stores indexed by Storeleads. Here's what the subscription-app market actually looks like at the Plus tier, by adoption percentage rather than by marketing claim. We ran the same install-base read on the reviews-app market across those Plus stores, where the leaderboard looks very different.

Subscription app adoption across Shopify Plus (May 2026)

What the data reveals

  • Recharge dominates, and it isn't close. 9.43% of Plus stores. More than 4 times the next-largest player. The default at the $1M+ subscription Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) tier.
  • Appstle is the surprise number-two. 2.19% adoption is more than Loop, Bold, and Smartrr combined. Concentrated in lower-volume Plus brands where the aggressive free tier wins.
  • Loop and native Shopify Subscriptions are clustered. Both around 1%. Loop is the modern challenger; native Subscriptions is Shopify's own free option.
  • Bold and Smartrr are minor players at the Plus tier. Combined under 0.6%. Bold is the legacy budget option; Smartrr is the boutique retention-focused new entrant.

Recharge (9.43%): the market leader

Position: Default at scale. Deepest application programming interface (API) for custom flows. Most enterprise-ready.

Strengths: Enterprise features, customizable subscription flows, robust analytics, deep integrations with Klaviyo and Gorgias and major third-party logistics providers (3PLs).

Weaknesses: Expensive at scale (1 to 1.5 percent of subscription revenue on higher tiers). User experience (UX) trails Smartrr on modern mobile feel.

Cost: $99 to $499+ per month base plus revenue percentage. At $1M subscription ARR, often $15K to $25K per year all-in.

Appstle (2.19%): the disruptor

Position: Aggressive Shopify App Store positioning. Free tier won the lower-volume Plus market.

Strengths: Generous free plan, comprehensive feature set for the price, fast iteration.

Weaknesses: Smaller installed base at the $5M+ tier. Enterprise-grade integrations less mature than Recharge.

Cost: Free tier available. Paid plans start under $50 per month.

Loop Subscriptions (1.32%): the modern challenger

Position: Newer entrant, modern user interface (UI), retention-focused features.

Strengths: Strong cohort and retention analytics. Pause, skip, swap, gift flows. Better mobile customer experience than Recharge.

Weaknesses: Smaller install base. Fewer third-party integrations.

Cost: Tiered by subscriber count, typically $99 to $499+ per month.

Bold (0.42%) and Smartrr (0.17%): minor players

Bold Subscriptions: Legacy budget option. Flat $49.99 to $149.99 per month. Doesn't scale with revenue. Common at small-to-mid Plus brands but losing share to Appstle.

Smartrr: Boutique retention-focused tool, 2020-launched. Best-in-class pause/skip/swap features. $99 to $499+ per month. Tiny install footprint but loyal users in beauty and food/beverage subscription categories.

The decision framework

$500K to $2M subscription ARR, growth-stageLoop (modern retention features per dollar)
$2M+ subscription ARR, custom flow needsRecharge (depth + enterprise features)

Migration pain

Subscription app migration is one of the more painful migrations in the Shopify ecosystem. Customer subscriptions, payment tokens, billing schedules, and custom flows all need careful transfer. Budget:

  • 2 to 4 months elapsed time
  • $20K to $100K consulting depending on subscriber count
  • 1 to 3 percent subscriber loss during transition (manage proactively with email plus customer success)
  • Parallel run period to catch reconciliation issues

Most brands defer migration until growth forces it. The right time to migrate is when your current app's limitations are costing more in lost Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) than the migration itself would cost.

The churn-rate ROI math

Subscription churn is the number-one LTV driver. At $5M subscription ARR with 5 percent monthly churn, a 1 percentage point churn reduction equals $400K to $600K of incremental annual contribution. If modern retention features (Loop or Smartrr) reduce churn 2 points versus basic billing (Bold), that's $800K to $1.2M of incremental contribution. Orders of magnitude above the tool cost difference.

Methodology

Pulled May 2026. Adoption count equals number of Shopify Plus stores running each app as detected by Storeleads via app installation (`shopify.subscription-payments` for Recharge, etc.) or technology fingerprint where the app isn't installed via the standard route. Denominator equals 74,777 total Plus stores in the Storeleads index. Some adoption signals may slightly understate true usage when detection depends on visible storefront elements.
