Shopify's backyard: 170,307 Canadian Shopify stores, 3,853 on Plus, and the most BNPL-fragmented major Shopify market we have measured
Canada has 170,307 active Shopify stores, with 3,853 running Shopify Plus (2.26%). Apparel leads verticals at 19.9%, Klaviyo dominates email at 12.7%, and BNPL is split four ways across Sezzle, Afterpay, Klarna, and Affirm. No other major Shopify market fragments buy-now-pay-later this badly. If you sell into Canada, your payment and email stack assumptions need a rethink.
Key Takeaways
- Canada has 170,307 active Shopify stores, the #4 country by Shopify store count. 3,853 of those (2.26%) sit on Shopify Plus, a touch above the global Plus density of 2.10% and matching the US (2.26%). Shopify is headquartered at 151 O'Connor St in Ottawa, so this is the home market.
- Canadian Shopify is the most BNPL-fragmented market we have measured. No single BNPL provider clears 3% installed share. Sezzle 2.3%, Afterpay 2.3%, Klarna 0.85%, Affirm 0.55%, PayBright (Affirm Canada) 0.16%. Combined BNPL penetration is 6.25%, against Australia's 26.3% on Afterpay alone.
- Shopify out-counts WooCommerce in Canada by 2.28 to 1 (170,307 vs 74,660). That makes Canada the most Shopify-dominant of the major English-speaking markets, ahead of the United States (~2.0x) and Australia (1.82x).
- Klaviyo is the leading paid marketing tool on Canadian Shopify at 12.7% (21,637 stores). Mailchimp is on 6.5%. Klaviyo's CA penetration is materially lower than its AU penetration (21.4%), so Canadian DTC is more split between Klaviyo and Mailchimp than other English-speaking markets.
- Ottawa is over-indexed by about 1.4x (roughly 40%) against its share of Canadian population. 4.9% of Canadian Shopify stores are in Ottawa, against about 3.5% of the national population. The Shopify HQ halo is real and measurable, just smaller than the headline number sometimes implies.
If you sell on Shopify in Canada, the question "where do I sit versus the rest of the market" has never had a clean answer. Statistics Canada retail-trade releases are useful for the macro but tell you nothing about plan mix, theme choice, or whether your tech stack is normal. Storeleads, the paid stack-detection service, will tell you, but the data is locked behind paid seats. This post pulls the whole Canadian Shopify landscape from Storeleads' live API on 2026-06-01 and makes it free to reference. Every number that follows comes from the same pull.
The short version: Canada has 170,307 active Shopify stores. 3,853 of those are on Shopify Plus (2.26% of the CA base, a touch above the 2.10% global Plus share and matching the US exactly). Apparel is the dominant category at 19.9% of stores. Klaviyo is the leading paid marketing tool at 12.7% penetration (though 87% of CA Shopify is not on Klaviyo, so it is the default among paid tools rather than universal). And Canada is the most BNPL-fragmented Shopify market we have measured: no single BNPL provider clears 3% installed share.
This is Shopify's home market. Shopify Inc. is headquartered at 151 O'Connor St in Ottawa, the Plus pricing concessions that show up in our negotiations conversations almost always trace back to the Ottawa team, and Ottawa itself is over-indexed for Shopify-store density by about 1.4x (roughly 40%) against its share of Canadian population.
How big is the Canadian Shopify base, really?
Storeleads counts 170,307 active CA Shopify stores as of 2026-06-01. "Active" here means the domain is currently responding to a HEAD request and Storeleads' fingerprinter can confirm Shopify on the backend. BuiltWith, which detects Shopify code at any point during its crawl history, reports about 189,000 CA Shopify stores. The gap (roughly 19,000 stores) is parked or dead domains that still carry Shopify code on cached pages.
For benchmarking, Storeleads is the right number. It is the live competitor set. BuiltWith is the right number when you want a ceiling on how many CA brands have ever touched the platform. Both numbers move a few thousand week to week.
Canada is also the most Shopify-dominant of the major English-speaking markets. WooCommerce has 74,660 live CA stores by the same Storeleads pull. Shopify out-counts WooCommerce in Canada by 2.28 to 1, ahead of the United States (~2.0x) and Australia (1.82x). If a competitor in your category is on WooCommerce in Canada, they are unusual.
3,853 of those 170,307 CA Shopify stores sit on Shopify Plus. That works out to 2.26% of the CA base, matching the United States almost exactly and sitting a touch above the 2.10% global Plus share. We hear from CFO calls with high-7-fig DTC operators that Shopify Plus pricing concessions kick in at a revenue threshold lower than most operators would expect; the Canadian named-brand layer (Arc'teryx, Indigo, Mejuri, Knix, Saje, Frank And Oak, DAVIDsTEA, Vessi, Sheertex and dozens more) all sit on Plus.
One honest caveat. Storeleads does not distinguish the three non-Plus tiers (Basic, Shopify Standard, Advanced Shopify) reliably. Plus is the only plan it can confirm via TLS and back-end fingerprinting. That is why the chart above shows a two-bucket split. We treat 166,454 as the combined non-Plus universe.
What Canadians sell on Shopify
Apparel is the dominant vertical at 19.9% of CA Shopify stores (33,889 stores). That is roughly 1 in 5 stores selling clothes. Home and Garden is second at 11.2% (19,057 stores), followed by Beauty and Fitness at 9.2% (15,659), Food and Drink at 7.6% (12,957), Sports at 4.2%, Arts and Entertainment at 4.1%, and Health at 3.9%. Outside Apparel, no single category cracks 12%.
The long tail is heavy. If you sell pet products (2.6%), autos (2.7%), business and industrial goods (2.3%), books (0.9%), or consumer electronics (1.3%), you are in a small category in absolute terms (between 1,500 and 4,500 stores each). Two implications. Your competitor set is small enough that you can probably name the top 50 brands by hand. And your category-specific app ecosystem is shallower than it would be in Apparel or Beauty, so you carry more "we built it ourselves" tech than the larger verticals.
A note on the taxonomy. Storeleads uses Google's product category schema and a store can appear in more than one category. The shares above sum to less than 100% because many stores have no category assigned. This is a taxonomy breakdown, not a revenue breakdown; Apparel's 19.9% store share probably understates Apparel's revenue share of CA Shopify GMV because the named Plus brands skew Apparel.
The Canadian Shopify tech stack: what is actually installed
This is the chart most operators want to see. Penetration of named apps and technologies across the 170,307-store CA Shopify base.
Three things stand out.
Apple Pay (56.2%), Shop Pay (55.7%), Google Pay (54.5%) and PayPal Express (44.7%) each sit on or near half of CA Shopify stores. Wallet penetration is meaningfully lower than in Australia (where Apple Pay sits at 67.3%), which is the cleanest single data point that Canadian merchants enable fewer wallets per checkout on average. If your CA checkout is missing any of the four, your conversion rate is showing it.
Canada is the most BNPL-fragmented Shopify market we have measured. Sezzle 2.3% (3,973 stores), Afterpay 2.3% (3,995), Klarna 0.85% (1,454), Affirm 0.55% (945), and PayBright (Affirm Canada) 0.16% (281). Combined BNPL penetration is 6.25%, against Australia's 26.3% on Afterpay alone. The structural reason is two-sided: Sezzle was founded in 2016 to serve the US and Canadian millennial market, and PayBright (Canadian-grown, acquired by Affirm in 2020) ate the share Klarna might otherwise have built. The CFO read for cross-border AU and US brands expanding into Canada: do not assume your BNPL provider has the same footprint here. If your AU brand runs Afterpay and you launch into Canada without adding Sezzle, you are reaching only about a third (~37%) of the BNPL-comfortable buyer pool, not all of it.
Klaviyo runs marketing on 12.7% of CA Shopify (21,637 stores). Mailchimp is on 6.5%. Omnisend is on 2.1%. Klaviyo's Canadian penetration is roughly 60% of its Australian penetration (21.4%), so Canadian DTC adopted Klaviyo later and is more split with Mailchimp than other English-speaking markets. Microsoft Clarity has displaced paid heatmap tools as the CA analytics default at 3.2% (5,496 stores) against Triple Whale at 0.83% and Northbeam at 0.05%. Same pattern as Australia: Microsoft's free tool is eating Hotjar's share inside Shopify's home market because it is free.
A known gap: we could not confirm A2X, Cin7, Unleashed or DEAR penetration via Storeleads on this pull. The Storeleads app tokens for those specific accounting and inventory apps either returned zero or returned the full base (silently no-op). We have flagged that for a follow-up post when we cross-reference the Shopify App Store install counts directly.
Themes: Dawn wins the modern share, legacy themes still beat it in aggregate
Theme detection is less reliable than tech detection because most Plus brands rename their theme file to disguise the lineage, but for the broader CA base the signal is clean.
Theme CA installs CA share Vendor Dawn 20,836 12.2% Shopify (free) Debut (legacy) 12,886 7.6% Shopify (free / legacy) Refresh 3,147 1.85% Shopify (free) Impulse 3,049 1.79% Archetype Minimal (legacy) 2,968 1.74% Shopify (free / legacy) Brooklyn (legacy) 2,510 1.47% Shopify (free / legacy) Prestige 2,355 1.38% Maestrooo Venture (legacy) 1,928 1.13% Shopify (free / legacy) Trade 1,813 1.06% Shopify (free) Supply (legacy) 1,618 0.95% Shopify (free / legacy) Sense 1,506 0.88% Shopify (free) Narrative (legacy) 1,320 0.78% Shopify (free / legacy) Empire 1,120 0.66% Pixel Union Warehouse 1,016 0.60% Krown Themes Broadcast 847 0.50% Invisible Themes Symmetry 781 0.46% Clean Themes
Dawn (Shopify's current free default) sits on 12.2% of CA Shopify stores. The legacy free themes (Debut, Brooklyn, Narrative, Supply, Minimal, Venture) collectively appear on 23,230 stores (13.6%), which is more than Dawn alone. That pool is mostly older stores that have not migrated to the Online Store 2.0 architecture Dawn requires. If you are still on Debut or Brooklyn in 2026, that is legacy debt and you are leaving page-speed and check-out features on the table.
Paid themes (Impulse 1.8%, Prestige 1.4%, Empire 0.7%, Warehouse 0.6%, Broadcast 0.5%, Symmetry 0.5%) carry far less of the CA base than they do of CA GMV. On Shopify Plus specifically, the picture flips: only about 19% of CA Plus stores run a detectable theme (Dawn 7.9%, Prestige 3.4%, Impulse 3.4%, Empire 2.6%, Broadcast 1.1%, Symmetry 0.9%). The remaining ~81% of CA Plus stores run a custom theme or have renamed an Impulse / Prestige / Empire starter so the lineage is no longer detectable. That custom-theme share is the cleanest signal Storeleads gives us that a store is a serious CA DTC brand.
The named flagship Canadian Shopify Plus brands
Working from the Storeleads global rank sorted within CA Plus, the named brand layer is dominated by Apparel, Beauty and Outdoors. The table below captures the top 26 by rank as of the 2026-06-01 pull. Employee counts are LinkedIn-derived (via Storeleads) and accurate to within roughly 10%.

Three of the most famous Canadian DTC brands are not on this list because they are not on Shopify today. Aritzia runs a Fourthwall storefront on aritzias.online and a separate enterprise platform on aritzia.com. Article runs a fully custom commerce platform (no Shopify, never was). Endy migrated off Shopify after the Sleep Country acquisition. They are excellent name-drops for "DTC brands that grew up Canadian but moved off Shopify"; they are not Plus census data.
Where the stores actually are
Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver hold a quarter of the entire CA Shopify base. The breakdown below uses Storeleads' city field, which is optional and under-populated (only about 25% of CA records have a city), so the absolute counts are lower bounds. The relative ratios are still the cleanest geographic signal Storeleads gives us.
City Active Shopify stores Share of CA Shopify Toronto 19,201 11.3% Montreal 9,775 5.7% Ottawa 8,390 4.9% Vancouver 5,763 3.4% Other or not specified 127,178 74.7%
Ottawa is the standout. The city carries about 3.5% of Canada's population but 4.9% of its active Shopify stores: an over-index of about 1.4x (roughly 40%) on a per-capita basis. (The math: 4.9% / 3.5% = 1.4x, not the 3x figure that gets passed around in some Shopify-HQ-halo writeups; the effect is real but smaller than the headline.) This is a direct halo from Shopify being headquartered at 151 O'Connor St, Ottawa: the partner agency density, the talent pool, and the early-merchant pipeline are all denser than the macro population numbers would predict. Toronto's 11.3% (19,201 stores) is the largest absolute concentration, but Ottawa's per-capita ratio is the more interesting data point.
How Canada compares to other Shopify country markets
To put 170,307 in context, here is the CA base alongside the four largest Shopify country markets globally.
Market Active Shopify stores Shopify Plus Plus share Global 3,602,917 75,574 2.10% United States 1,272,185 28,719 2.26% United Kingdom 251,169 6,233 2.48% Canada 170,307 3,853 2.26% Australia 152,323 3,653 2.40%
Canada matches the United States exactly at 2.26% Plus density and sits below both the United Kingdom (2.48%) and Australia (2.40%). The four non-US markets in this table (UK, Canada, Australia and the implicit rest-of-world tail) together hold 18.2% of all Shopify Plus globally, against the United States' 38.0%. That asymmetry matters when you are forecasting the CA opportunity: Canada is 4.7% of global Shopify stores, but the named-brand layer here punches well above its store-count weight because Shopify is a Canadian company by origin.
What this means for benchmarking your Canadian brand
Three useful tests you can run on your own stack against these numbers.
One: is your checkout normal? If you are missing any of Apple Pay, Shop Pay, Google Pay or PayPal Express, you are an outlier among CA Shopify stores. Each of those four wallets sits on at least 44% of stores. The fastest CAD-denominated conversion win this year for most operators is enabling whichever of the four you are missing.
Two: is your BNPL strategy right for Canada specifically? Unlike Australia (where Afterpay is the obvious default), Canadian Shopify is the only major market where no single BNPL provider clears 3%. The practical implication: a single-provider BNPL strategy reaches only 25% to 40% of the BNPL-comfortable buyer pool. If you are launching a US or AU brand into Canada and you only carry Afterpay or Affirm at checkout, add Sezzle. Combined wallet share matters more than picking the "right" provider, because no provider is dominant.
Three: is your marketing stack the default? Klaviyo on 12.7% means "leading paid tool" rather than "everyone uses it" the way it does in Australia. If you are on Mailchimp, you are running with about half the Canadian market. The signal here is more about your flow sophistication than the ESP brand; the gap shows up in repeat-purchase rate and LTV more than any single campaign.
Canadian Shopify is the only major Shopify market we have measured where no single BNPL provider clears 3% installed share. Sezzle, Afterpay, Klarna, Affirm and PayBright all sit between 0.16% and 2.3%. If you sell into Canada with one BNPL at checkout, you are giving away roughly two-thirds (~63%) of the BNPL-comfortable buyer pool to competitors who run two or three.
If you want to see how the Canadian Shopify stack interacts with the rest of North America, this post is the denominator for the AU vs US ecommerce finance comparison and our Australian Shopify landscape census. For the cross-border tax conversation we hear on almost every Canadian-expansion CFO call, the state-by-state sales tax exposure tracker covers the US-side counterpart to Canadian GST, PST and HST registration.
Sources and methodology
Primary source. All figures in this post come from Storeleads' API (storeleads.app), accessed on 2026-06-01 via the Storeleads MCP. The CA Shopify base uses the filter platform=shopify, country=CA. Plus counts apply the additional filter plan="Shopify Plus". Tech and app penetration uses Storeleads' technology-detection layer, which fingerprints both front-end script tags and back-end signals.
The Plus-vs-non-Plus split is two buckets, not four. Storeleads will reliably confirm Shopify Plus via TLS and backend fingerprinting, but it does not surface the three lower-tier distinctions (Basic Shopify, Shopify Standard, Advanced Shopify) on the CA country pull. So our "non-Plus" universe is one combined 166,454 number. Shopify Inc. disclose Plus contribution to total GMV publicly via investors.shopify.com (Plus was approximately 32% of total GMV in Q4 FY25), but that is a revenue figure, not a store-count figure, so applying it to the CA store-count split would be a guess and we have not done so.
Cross-reference with BuiltWith. BuiltWith reports approximately 189,000 CA Shopify stores at trends.builtwith.com/websitelist/Shopify/Canada. Storeleads' 170,307 captures roughly 90% of the BuiltWith universe. The gap is parked or dead domains that still carry Shopify code in BuiltWith's crawl history but that Storeleads' live-response check excludes. We treat Storeleads as the more useful number for benchmarking against live competitors.
Reconciliation with the earlier Storeleads CA report. An earlier Storeleads CA snapshot from May 2026 cited 141,602 active CA Shopify stores and 3,688 on Plus (~2.6% Plus density). Our 2026-06-01 pull shows 170,307 / 3,853 (2.26%). The directional Plus density (2.3% to 2.6%) is stable across both pulls, but the live-count denominator expands as Storeleads' fingerprinter detects more domains over time. The two-month gap added roughly 28,700 newly visible stores; the Plus count moved less because Plus identification depends on TLS and back-end fingerprinting that is already reliable. We treat 170,307 as the more current denominator.
Category taxonomy. Storeleads uses Google's product category schema. A store can appear in multiple top-level categories, and a meaningful share of stores have no category assigned at all, which is why the category shares above sum to less than 100%. We have used top-level categories only. The Storeleads filter expects a leading slash (for example /Apparel); the bare Apparel form returns zero, and a trailing slash also returns zero, so any reproduction script must use the canonical /Apparel form.
Technology and theme case sensitivity. Storeleads' technology filter is case-sensitive; for example Sezzle (uppercase S) returns 3,973 while lowercase sezzle returns zero. The theme_name filter is lowercase-only; for example theme_name=dawn returns 20,836 while Dawn returns zero. We use the canonical names from the Storeleads technologies catalog (verified against real CA Plus store records like knix.com and frankandoak.com) and prose the names in their natural title case.
Triangulation. Klaviyo's 21,637 technology-detection count cross-validates against an independent Storeleads Klaviyo app-install count of 20,113 from a separate Storeleads report (within 7% of our figure). Mejuri (US$160-178M revenue, 825 employees per Revelio, Toronto HQ) and Frank And Oak (approximately 123-150 employees per Storeleads and PitchBook respectively) were confirmed as live Shopify Plus brands via direct domain lookup. Aritzia, Article and Endy were confirmed as not currently on Shopify via the same lookup process and excluded from the flagship table.
Known data gaps. Five filters on the Storeleads MCP silently no-op'd against the CA base on this pull: creation_date (no store-age histogram), state_province (no Ontario vs BC vs Quebec breakdown), previous_platform (no Magento-to-Shopify migration count), min_employee_count and min_monthly_visits. The city filter does narrow but most stores have no city set, so the city distribution is sparse. Several Canada-relevant accounting and inventory apps (A2X, Cin7, Unleashed, DEAR) returned either zero or the full base, suggesting the Storeleads app tokens for those slugs are mis-mapped on this pull. We have flagged that for a follow-up.
Update cadence. This census is a point-in-time snapshot. We expect to refresh quarterly. The CA Shopify base moves a few thousand stores week to week as new domains are detected and dead domains drop out; the percentages quoted here are stable to within roughly plus or minus 0.5 percentage points across a quarter.
Frequently asked questions
how many shopify stores are there in canada in 2026?
170,307 as of 2026-06-01 (Storeleads live count). BuiltWith reports about 189,000 because it counts parked and dead domains that still carry Shopify code from older crawls. Storeleads (which only counts currently responding domains) captures roughly 90% of the BuiltWith universe. Both numbers move week to week; 170K-190K is the right range to quote.
how many shopify plus merchants are there in canada?
3,853 as of 2026-06-01, or 2.26% of the Canadian Shopify base. That matches the United States (2.26%) almost exactly and sits a touch above the global Plus share of 2.10%. Named CA Plus brands include Arc'teryx, Indigo, Mejuri, Knix, Saje Natural Wellness, Frank And Oak, DAVIDsTEA, Vessi and Sheertex.
is shopify bigger than woocommerce in canada?
Yes, by 2.28 to 1. Storeleads counts 170,307 CA Shopify stores against 74,660 CA WooCommerce stores. Canada is the most Shopify-dominant of the major English-speaking markets we measure, ahead of the United States (~2.0x) and Australia (1.82x).
which bnpl provider has the highest penetration on canadian shopify, sezzle or afterpay or affirm?
It is genuinely fragmented. Afterpay sits on 2.3% (3,995 stores), Sezzle 2.3% (3,973), Klarna 0.85%, Affirm 0.55%, and PayBright (now Affirm Canada) 0.16%. No single BNPL provider clears 3%. Combined BNPL penetration is 6.25%, against Australia's 26.3% on Afterpay alone. If you sell into Canada with one BNPL provider, you are missing roughly two-thirds (about 63%) of the BNPL-comfortable buyer pool.
is klaviyo or mailchimp more popular on canadian shopify?
Klaviyo by roughly 2 to 1. Klaviyo runs on 12.7% of CA Shopify stores (21,637 installs). Mailchimp is on 6.5% (11,101). Omnisend is on 2.1%. Klaviyo's CA penetration is materially lower than its AU penetration (21.4%), so Canadian DTC is the most split between Klaviyo and Mailchimp of any English-speaking market we have measured.
what's the most common theme on canadian shopify stores?
Dawn, Shopify's current free default. It sits on 12.2% of Canadian Shopify stores (20,836 installs). Legacy free themes (Debut, Brooklyn, Narrative, Supply, Minimal, Venture) collectively appear on 13.6% (23,230 stores), more than Dawn alone. On Plus specifically, about 81% of CA brands run a custom or unidentifiable theme.
how does canada compare to the united states and australia on shopify plus density?
Canada and the United States are tied at 2.26% Plus density. Australia is a notch above at 2.40%, and the United Kingdom leads at 2.48%. The global average is 2.10%. Canada sits firmly in the higher-density cluster, which is consistent with Shopify being headquartered in Ottawa and the partner ecosystem being denser at home.
why is ottawa over-indexed for shopify stores relative to its population?
Shopify is headquartered at 151 O'Connor St in Ottawa. The HQ pulls partner agencies, talent and early-stage merchants to the city. Ottawa is 4.9% of Canadian Shopify stores (8,390 stores) against about 3.5% of national population, so the city is over-indexed by about 1.4x (roughly 40%) on a per-capita basis. Toronto is still the largest absolute concentration at 11.3% (19,201 stores), but Ottawa's per-capita ratio is the standout.
