Shopify Tax vs Avalara vs TaxJar in 2026: when native wins, when you outgrow it

·By Matt Putra, Managing Partner ·15 min read

Shopify Tax handles nexus calculation and US collection automatically at no extra cost up to a revenue threshold, making it the right default for brands selling only in the US via Shopify. TaxJar adds filing automation starting around $19 per month, and Avalara AvaTax is the upgrade for brands with Amazon FBA nexus across 20-plus states, multi-channel complexity, or cross-border VAT and GST obligations where Shopify Tax's coverage ends.

Shopify Tax vs Avalara vs TaxJar in 2026: when native wins, when you outgrow it

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify Tax does not file returns or remit tax. It calculates at checkout and reports by state. You still need a CPA or a third-party tool to actually file. Most operators do not learn this until their first notice.
  • Shopify Tax charges 0.35% of taxable orders above the $100K threshold, capped at $0.99 per order and $5,000 per state per year. That is per Shopify Plus collateral, not the public pricing page.
  • The cutover trigger is roughly 15 nexus states or any non-Shopify channel. Past that, TaxJar Professional ($99 per month plus AutoFile credits) or Avalara AvaTax (quote-based, typically $50-200 per state per month stacked) pays for itself in filing-time savings and audit defense.
  • Avalara wins enterprise, TaxJar wins the US mid-market. Avalara covers 13,000+ US jurisdictions at rooftop-level geocoding, NetSuite, exemption certificates, and cross-border VAT/GST. TaxJar is US-first with AutoFile and a sub-$100 starting price.
  • Stripe Tax is the long-term roadmap question for TaxJar. Stripe acquired TaxJar in 2021 and now markets Stripe Tax across 30+ countries. TaxJar still ships as standalone, but 9-figure adopters should factor in product-direction risk.

We get this question from operators every month: "We are on Shopify Tax, but we keep getting state notices. Do we move to Avalara or TaxJar?" The honest answer matters because the wrong call costs you either thousands a year in software you do not use, or back-tax and penalties on missed filings that can dwarf years of subscription cost. As of mid-2026, the decision is not about which tool is "best." It is about your nexus state count, your channel mix, and whether you are about to add NetSuite, a marketplace, or international. Here is what we tell brands sitting at $5M to $150M GMV, why this matters now, and what to watch next quarter as Stripe Tax expands.

What Shopify Tax actually does (and does not)

Shopify Tax is the calculation engine built into Shopify checkout. It applies the right rate per shipping address, flags economic-nexus thresholds as you cross them, and gives you a per-state report you can hand off for filing. That is where its job ends.

Shopify Tax does not file returns. It does not remit tax to states. It does not dedupe marketplace facilitator orders across channels. It does not manage exemption certificates. It does not give you rooftop-level geocoding (it works at address level, which is fine for most ZIPs but breaks down in Colorado home-rule cities, Louisiana parishes, and Alabama localities where the same ZIP straddles two tax jurisdictions). International coverage is basic checkout VAT/GST, not a full global tax engine.

Pricing on Shopify Plus, per merchant collateral, is 0.35 percent of taxable orders in US states where you are above the $100K economic-nexus threshold, capped at $0.99 per order and $5,000 per state per year. Below the threshold, calculation is free. Premium add-ons (more granular reporting, exemption support) are quoted separately. These figures are not on the public Shopify pricing page, so confirm with your account team if your contract differs.

For most US-only Shopify-only 7-figure brands collecting in fewer than 15 states, Shopify Tax plus a CPA is the right stack. You are paying for what you actually use, the CPA labor is still cheap at that state count, and you are not adding a vendor contract. The moment you cross 15 states or add Amazon, the math flips.

Cost comparison: what you pay at 5, 15, 30 nexus states

The chart below models monthly cost across the three tools as your nexus state count grows. The lines cross at two predictable points. Shopify Tax is cheapest below 15 states. TaxJar takes over the mid-market band from roughly 10 to 25 states. Avalara is the most expensive throughout but scales most gracefully past 30 states because its per-state pricing flattens with volume.

The Shopify Tax line is modeled, not list price. We assumed $1M in taxable GMV per state per month (a representative mid-market figure) above the $100K threshold, applied the 0.35 percent rate, and capped at $5,000 per state per year. Your actual cost varies with your GMV mix. The TaxJar Professional line uses published $99 base plus the $55 AutoFile credit per state per filing month. The Avalara line is a triangulated industry estimate from the Galvix, Rivo, and TaxCloud 2026 buyer guides; Avalara itself does not publish list prices.

The entry-point comparison shows where each tool starts you before per-state filing math kicks in:

TaxJar Starter at $39 a month is the cheapest entry, but Starter caps out fast on filing volume. Professional at $99 is the working tier for most multi-channel 8-figure brands. Avalara's entry is the highest because the typical buy is AvaTax core plus the Returns module, often stacked with CertCapture for B2B exemption certificates.

Capability matrix: where the line is drawn in 2026

Pricing is the easy comparison. The capability gap is where operators get burned.

The most important row is "marketplace facilitator dedup." If you sell on Amazon or Walmart, those marketplaces collect and remit sales tax on your behalf in nearly every state under marketplace facilitator laws. That is not the problem. The problem is your nexus footprint still counts those sales toward the threshold, and if your tools cannot dedupe across channels, you end up either over-filing (paying tax twice) or under-counting your nexus exposure. Shopify Tax sees the Shopify channel only. Avalara and TaxJar see everything.

Avalara AvaTax: when the enterprise stack pays for itself

Avalara is the system-of-record once you have any two of: 20-plus nexus states, a non-Shopify channel, NetSuite or another ERP on the roadmap, international expansion in the next 12 months, or B2B with exemption certificates. The reason is that those use cases each require a distinct module (AvaTax core, Returns, CertCapture, Cross-Border, ECM Pro), and Avalara is the only vendor that ships them all on one contract.

The rooftop-level geocoding matters more than it sounds. Avalara claims coverage of 13,000+ US tax jurisdictions and uses the actual delivery address (not the ZIP) to apply the right local rate. For brands shipping into Colorado, Louisiana, Alabama, or any state with home-rule cities, that geocoding precision is the difference between clean audit findings and material under-collection on ZIP straddles where the same postal code maps to two tax jurisdictions.

The tradeoff is implementation. Avalara is a quote-based enterprise contract with multi-module implementations that typically take weeks, not days, and the all-in cost rises sharply once you stack Returns, CertCapture, and Cross-Border. If you are a $20M Shopify-only US-only brand, that math does not work. If you are a $60M brand on NetSuite with Amazon at 25 percent of revenue and a UK launch planned, it works.

TaxJar: the US-first AutoFile workhorse

TaxJar sits in the middle. Starter is $39 a month with limited AutoFile credits, Professional is $99 with the working AutoFile tier, and additional state filings run $50 (Starter) or $55 (Professional) per registered state per filing cadence. State registration as a service is $299 each. The product covers Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Etsy, BigCommerce, and Shopify natively, dedupes marketplace facilitator orders, tracks nexus thresholds, and files automatically once you turn AutoFile on per state.

What TaxJar does not do well: international (it is US-only), exemption certificates (basic only), NetSuite (limited connector), and audit defense (limited professional services bench). It is the right answer for US multi-channel mid-market and the wrong answer the moment your roadmap includes EU, B2B exemptions at scale, or NetSuite.

The Stripe Tax question is real. Stripe acquired TaxJar in 2021 and has since invested heavily in Stripe Tax across 30+ countries. TaxJar still ships as standalone, and Stripe has not announced sunset plans. But if you are a 9-figure brand signing a 3-year contract in 2026, ask Stripe directly about the TaxJar product roadmap. For Shopify operators specifically, TaxJar's deeper marketplace and US-state integrations make it the more battle-tested option through 2026, but factor the strategic question into your renewal cadence.

The decision framework: a 5-question test

Walk through these five questions. Two or more "yes" answers point at Avalara. One "yes" (other than the first) points at Avalara at the lightweight tier. Mostly "no" with question 1 being the only yes points at TaxJar Professional. All "no" means stay on Shopify Tax with a CPA filer.

  1. Do you have nexus in 15 or more states today, or expect to within 12 months?
  2. Do you sell on Amazon, Walmart, BigCommerce, or any non-Shopify channel?
  3. Will you implement NetSuite (or another ERP) within 24 months?
  4. Will you launch into EU, UK, Canada, or Australia within 12 months?
  5. Do you sell B2B and need to manage exemption certificates?

The framework is deliberate. Question 1 is a scaling problem (TaxJar fixes it). Questions 2 through 5 are capability problems (only Avalara fixes them). Most operators we see at the cutover moment have a yes on question 1 plus a yes on either 2 or 3, which is why Avalara wins the 8-figure consideration set even when TaxJar is cheaper on paper.

The wrong call here is not "I picked Avalara when TaxJar would have done." The wrong call is staying on Shopify Tax past the 15-state line because you do not want a new contract. State notices arrive in the mail 18 months after the under-collection started, and the back-tax plus penalties on three years of missed filings dwarfs three years of TaxJar subscription. Pick on the trigger, not the contract.

What to watch next

Two things are worth tracking through Q3 2026. First, Stripe's product direction on Stripe Tax vs TaxJar. If Stripe announces a TaxJar feature freeze or a Stripe Tax migration tool, that changes the 3-year contract math for anyone signing in H2. Second, the new-entrant comp set. Numeral raised a $35M Series A in September 2025 on an AI-first positioning, Kintsugi is in market with per-filing pricing, and Zamp ($5M Series A 2024) is positioning against Avalara on simpler pricing. None of them are battle-tested enough to recommend over Avalara or TaxJar for an 8-figure brand yet, but the buyer-power shift over the next 12 months could move Avalara off its premium pricing posture.

Sources and methodology

Vendor product documentation. Pricing tiers, feature coverage, and module structure were pulled from Shopify Help Center documentation on Shopify Tax, TaxJar's pricing and product pages, and Avalara's Knowledge Center (specifically the ECM and Cross-Border product pages). Shopify Tax's 0.35 percent fee, $0.99 per-order cap, and $5,000 per-state-per-year cap are confirmed across Shopify Plus merchant collateral but are not published on Shopify's public pricing page.

Third-party buyer guides. The cross-vendor capability and pricing comparison draws on the TaxJar 2026 sales tax software comparison, Galvix's 12 Best Avalara Alternatives and Competitors 2026, Rivo's Best Sales Tax Tools for Ecommerce 2026, TaxCloud's 9 Best Sales Tax Software for Accountants 2026 review, and the 2Hats Logic and Numeral writeups on Shopify pricing and accounting stacks. These were all accessed June 2026.

Cost-curve modeling. The "monthly cost by states collecting" chart is illustrative, not vendor-confirmed. We assumed $1M in taxable GMV per state per month above the $100K economic-nexus threshold for the Shopify Tax line, applied the 0.35 percent rate, and capped at $5,000 per state per year. The TaxJar Professional line uses the published $99 base plus $55 AutoFile credit per registered state per filing cadence. The Avalara line is a triangulated industry estimate from Galvix and Rivo buyer-guide ranges of $50 to $200 per state per month once AvaTax core plus Returns is stacked. Your actual quote will vary with GMV, channel mix, and module selection.

Operator advisory context. The cutover triggers (15 nexus states, non-Shopify channel, NetSuite roadmap, international expansion, B2B exemptions) reflect Eightx operator advisory calls with 7-9-figure DTC brands across 2024 to 2026. Brand names and specific figures are anonymized.

Triangulation method. Pricing and feature data were triangulated via Perplexity Sonar Pro queries against public vendor pages and 2026 third-party buyer guides; operator anecdotes and cutover triggers are drawn from Eightx advisory calls. Pinecone and Parallel.ai were not run for this post because the public buyer-guide coverage was sufficient for a comparison piece.

Limitations explicitly noted. Shopify Tax pricing figures are circulated in Shopify Plus contracts, not Shopify's public pricing page. Avalara has no public list price. The new-entrant comp set (Numeral, Zamp, Kintsugi, TaxCloud) is referenced for context but not benchmarked because their pricing models and feature parity vary too much across the 2026 fundraising cycle.

Update cadence. This page is refreshed quarterly when vendor pricing pages, public Shopify Plus collateral, and Stripe Tax roadmap signals shift. Next update target: September 2026 (post-Q2 earnings cycle and Stripe roadmap signaling).

Frequently asked questions

does shopify tax actually file my returns or do i still need a cpa

Shopify Tax does not file. It calculates tax at checkout and gives you a per-state report you can hand to a CPA or upload to a third-party filer. If you are in 5 or fewer states, a CPA handles this fine. Past 10 states you will want AutoFile (TaxJar) or Returns (Avalara) because the per-state filing time stops scaling cleanly.

how much does shopify tax cost on shopify plus

Per Shopify Plus collateral, the fee is 0.35 percent of taxable orders in US states where you are above the $100K economic-nexus threshold, capped at $0.99 per order and $5,000 per state per year. Below the threshold it is free. These caps are not on the public pricing page, so confirm with your account team if your contract differs.

when do i outgrow shopify tax and need avalara or taxjar

Two triggers. First, when you are collecting in roughly 15 or more states because the per-state filing time stops being cheap CPA labor. Second, when you add any non-Shopify channel (Amazon, BigCommerce, Walmart, a wholesale ERP). Shopify Tax cannot dedupe marketplace facilitator orders across channels, which is the moment Avalara or TaxJar pays for itself.

is avalara worth it if i only sell on shopify

Usually no, unless you sell B2B with exemption certificates, are launching internationally in the next 12 months, or are implementing NetSuite. If you are US-only and Shopify-only, Avalara is overkill until you cross 25 to 30 nexus states. Most pure-Shopify 7-figure brands stay on Shopify Tax with a CPA filer until they add a channel.

can taxjar handle amazon and shopify in one dashboard

Yes. TaxJar pulls marketplace-collected orders from Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Etsy, and BigCommerce via direct connectors, dedupes them against your Shopify orders, and tracks state-by-state nexus thresholds across all of them. This is the main reason multi-channel 8-figure brands pick TaxJar over Shopify Tax.

does shopify tax work for canadian or uk vat

Shopify Tax includes basic checkout VAT/GST calculation for Canada, the UK, the EU, and Australia, but it is not a full global tax engine. It will not handle UK VAT registration, EU OSS filings, GST/HST returns, or Australian GST registration. For anything past simple checkout collection you need Avalara Cross-Border or a regional specialist.

what's the cheapest way to file sales tax in 20 states

If you are pure Shopify US-only at 20 states, TaxJar Professional at $99 a month plus 20 AutoFile credits at $55 each is usually the lowest all-in cost. A CPA filing 20 states manually adds up fast on per-return labor and is rarely competitive past 10 states in our advisory work. Avalara is more expensive at this volume but worth quoting if you are adding channels or international.

is stripe tax replacing taxjar in 2026

Not as of mid-2026, but the direction is there. Stripe acquired TaxJar in 2021 and continues to invest in Stripe Tax across 30+ countries. TaxJar ships as standalone for now, but 9-figure brands signing 3-year contracts should ask Stripe about the TaxJar product roadmap. For Shopify operators specifically, TaxJar remains the more battle-tested option through 2026.
